Canaveral National Seashore
The Canaveral National Seashore is a fifty seven thousand acre semitropical strip of paradise – the largest tract of undeveloped natural seashore, indigenous hammock and tidal wetlands in the United States.
| Love nature and the sea?: Our featured ocean-front condominium in Cape Canaveral is a beautiful beach side corner condo looking directly over the Atlantic Ocean, and just minutes from Canaveral National Seashore. |
It is a unique, natural wonderland just waiting to be enjoyed and explored, and offers a wide variety of experiences for nature lovers, sun worshipers and fishermen.
What can you do there? How about enjoying a lazy afternoon at the beach (life guards are on duty May through August). Or take a guided boating expedition to view the manatees or alligators, trek through the hammock to see eagles and some of the other three hundred and ten species of birds, or take a fishing expedition for trophy redfish.
The Canaveral Seashore is 24 miles long and extends North from the Kennedy Space Center out of Brevard County, and West from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian River.
The Playalinda beaches, located only twelve miles above Titusville, are almost totally undisturbed and provide a wonderful location for sunning, swimming, surfing, fishing, hiking, canoeing, boating and camping.
The forest or hammock of Canaveral National Seashore is a large expanse of virgin wetlands, with hiking trails for the beginner or experienced naturalist. Over one thousand species of plant life can be found along the trails.
Guided nature walks and special tours are provided by park personnel and various naturalist groups. Perhaps on one of these excursions you will encounter one of the fourteen endangered species which can be found here.
In particular, the Canaveral National Seashore bordering the Indian River is a stretch famous for fishing, yielding trophy redfish, and has many small inlets and bays which meander through the hammock.
Mosquito lagoon is one of these, and provides some of the best fishing in Florida – or in the world, for that matter – whether on your own or with the help of a professional local guide.
Altogether, the Canaveral National Seashore is a dream come true for ecotourism fans, beach enthusiasts and naturalists alike. One trip through its exceptionally delightful, untouched and un-crowded beaches, hammock and wetlands will have you coming back time after time.
